A Historical Retrospective and the Developments of Technical School Makarios III

The journey of Technical School Makarios III begins…

The initial efforts to establish the third Technical School of Nicosia date back to 1976, when the relevant state departments commenced investigations to locate a suitable site. These efforts soon led to an agreement involving the exchange of land with state-owned property and the payment of a monetary amount by the government to the Holy Monastery of Kykkos. The architectural plans were prepared by the Technical Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Construction work began in April 1980 and was completed in the summer of 1981. At the same time, officials from the Department of Technical and Vocational Education played a constructive role in ensuring that the facilities and equipment of the school met contemporary needs.

In 1981, the new Technical School was named Technical School Makarios III, in honor of Archbishop Makarios III. That same year, the school opened its doors. Distinguished educators undertook the challenging task of managing the school, addressing issues such as road access, electricity supply, installation of telephone lines, and the initial sharing of premises with Kykkos B’ Gymnasium and later Archangelos Gymnasium.

Technical School Makarios III began operations with only two disciplines: Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering, both under Technical and Vocational Education. A year later, the specialization in Computer Electronics was introduced. In 1983, the Design branch was launched for the first time, and in 1985, Graphic Arts and Interior Design were added. In 1991, the Leather Goods and Footwear branch was established, while in 2003, the Hotel and Catering Arts branch and the Fashion Design branch were introduced. It is worth noting that in recent years, a program for integrating students with special abilities has been successfully implemented. A pivotal period for the school was from 1995 to 2003, during which it operated as a Unified Lyceum. However, substantial efforts were required to restore its proper functionality following these changes.

Student enrollment in the school has shown a significant upward trend, resulting in an increase in both the number of teachers and the number of classrooms.

Today, Technical School Makarios III has earned a distinguished place in public consciousness, as evidenced by the strong interest shown by students in attending one of its disciplines.
